1784

Although underglaze blue transfer printing was introduced on Worcester porcelain by 1757-58, it was almost 30 years later before Josiah Spode perfected the process for earthenware.

Spode’s earliest patterns in the late 1780s included Mandarin and Buffalo, the latter is illustrated  here . Early wares are typically a dark, inky blue colour; designs are often in the Chinese style, and the engraving is created with  basic linear cuts.
